Repeated use of free command from shell is freeing up memory?!?

Hi all,

Today I thought I would dig in a little deeper into the internal workings of android. I thought I'd check the general health of my phone (original myTouch) running CyanogenMod 5.0.8... When my phone is just done rebooting, I have anywhere between 4MB and 8MB of RAM free on my device.

However, I noticed that repeated entry of the free command seemed to be freeing up memory (to a certain point - the limit on my phone was between 20 and 25MB free). I thought the command free would only report on memory that is in use.

What is going on here?
